Sand is used on racecourses, riding arenas, golf courses and artificial turf because it helps drain surface water. High water permeability allows the surface to become usable shortly after rain.

The same washed sand is also used as filter media in water-treatment plants. A narrow grain size distribution and low clay and silt content are key in these applications.
